SPOTLIGHT ON ONE OF OUR COACHES: MEET GARY!
Growing up in Tacoma Gary had his first connection to roller skating from his father Gary Gandee Sr. who worked for Tacoma’s great rink Adam’s Roller Bowl. It was his father’s skates that he skated on in 1981 when an older neighbor boy invited him to check out a “session” at the Tacoma Skate King where he worked. He quickly joined the Speed team there and has been skating ever since.
- Participated on a National placing hockey travel team.
- Traveled to many locations around the United States, including USARS Speed Nationals every year.
- Spent time in Russia introducing inline skates and teaching Speed.
- Called on by K2 Inc. and Ultra Wheels for product development and testing.
- Competed in the 1996, ’97, ’98 and ‘99 X-Games for the In-line Downhill competition.
- Representative for Core Racing Wheels in Venice, CA.
- Trained Olympic Gold Medalist:
About 1993 some of our local in-line speed skaters took an interest in the ice. While Gary was practicing and coaching, a young Apolo Ohno was along for the ride. Not too long after Apolo left for the Olympic training Center, along came soon to be Olympic medalist J.R. Celski. Gary is very proud to have had the chance to mentor these athletes along the great path that skating has taken them on.
- Roller Derby:
Gary is an original player for Puget Sound Outcast Men’s Derby. Outcast was one of the first teams to spring up over 9 years ago striking a new popularity in Roller Derby. As well as being a player, Gary coaches his own league of Women’s and Junior Derby Toxic 253 established in 2008.
Coaching has always provided the most joy for Gary in roller skating. From world class skaters to the kids that Gary teaches beginning skills to on Saturday mornings at Rollin’ 253, every opportunity to teach skating brings him back to the early days of skating as a child. The love of roller skating and the good things that it can offer people are what Gary Gandee is all about.
